PRISMAcolor Manager enables commercial printer operators to manage the complex task of proactively measuring and assessing color by semi-automatically checking and comparing quality and consistency across Canon and non-Canon printers. Users follow step-by-step guidance and animations. In addition to a flexible UI with simple drag and filter functionalities, the real-time, easy-to-understand visualizations bring color results to life, automatically verifying color accuracy against industry standards and giving color specialists innovative historic score overviews at-a-glance.
The challenge was to simplify the complex measurement and analysis of the color quality of different (Canon and non-Canon) printers deployed by Print Service Providers (PSPs) and collate results - irrespective of the device - in one easy-to-understand user interface.
Reliable color quality is essential for Graphic Arts production. Measuring and analyzing color consistency across different devices and identifying trends in color quality over time is both complex and time consuming.
PRISMAcolor Manager enables commercial printer operators to easily and proactively measure and analyze color by semi automatically checking and comparing quality and consistency across Canon and non-Canon printers based on clear, real-time information and historic overviews.
PRISMAcolor Manager shows the operator simple, step-by-step animations of how to carry out color measurements, including the speed with which the measurements need to be carried out, thereby minimizing mistakes.
The accurate on-screen illustrations of the printed chart create a direct and clear relationship between the task the user sees on the screen compared to what is actually printed.
To simplify the display of the large amount of color metrics, the flexible UI offers drag and filter functionalities, so users can customize views to precisely see the information they need.
Results can be analyzed in high-level graphs (by managers), or in the form of detailed data reports e.g., per press (for operators and color specialists).
In line with the busy, mobile era, the PRISMAcolor Manager tool is a series of simple apps with a modern, minimalistic look and feel, that can be accessed 24/7 via the PRISMA Home cloud environment.
The color scheme in the UI, of mainly blues and greys, gives a calm and trusting environment for what is in fact a complex series of critical tasks.
PRISMAcolor Manager has been made in line with the latest configurability and personalization trends in consumer GUI development. In addition, PRISMAcolor Manager was developed in sprints with usability testing throughout the process.
Sections of the UI – such as the results of the tests – have been designed to be reusable in other PRISMA products, so that the right information can always be shared easily.
The user is guided through the measurement process, from initialization to reports. Where an associated physical task needs to be carried out, clear animations guide the operator.
To simplify the display of the large amounts of complex data, the flexible UI offers drag and filter functionalities so users can customize views, to collate and compare collections of tests and their results.
The status of the tasks is visible at all times in the cards at the top of the display.
Easy-to-understand trend graphs mean operators spend less time manually going through historical data in order to gain the insights they need to safeguard color quality.
With the simple guiding animations and intuitive UI, new operators have a shorter learning curve for mastering the traditionally complex process of carrying out and interpreting color measurements. This enables even non-specialists to quickly and automatically grade the results against recognized international standards such as GRACoL or FOGRA, zooming in color-by-color.
The printer-agnostic data collection and analysis collates all the color-related data necessary for compiling comprehensive reports in one central place (for Canon and non-Canon printers).
Optimizing color quality is one of the most critical aspects of commercial Graphic Arts printing. At the same time, linking and interpreting color measurement results is in fact the most complex task in safeguarding image quality in line with industry standards. In addition, most GA operations have more than one type of printer or even printer supplier.
PRISMAcolor Manager has been developed to address each of these aspects in turn:
1. Simplifying the color measurement process
2. Simplifying how results are displayed and analyzed
3. Collecting and collating color measurement results from different printers (Canon and non-Canon)
4. Comparing results against industry standards and tolerances
Canon printers are known for high color quality and consistency. PRISMAcolor Manager takes the next step in making color management easy and understandable for both specialized and non-specialized users.
All Canon new-generation cloud-connected PRISMA tools and applications use the newly developed Pigment Design System, for a coherent look, feel and behavior.
PRISMAcolor Manager offers one UI for all Canon engines.
During development tests we were able to realize a more comprehensible overview of color quality trends than was previously known to users. Animations during the measurement process proved to help recover previous potential errors resulting from the wrong movement speed.
Digital print reduces the need for high-number print runs and thus potentially unused stock. Digital print is more sensitive to color variation. The task of color management has traditionally been a complex process for highly skilled operators. PRISMAcolor Manager helps ensure a high quality level for digital prints with a simple, intuitive UI. This may help convince print providers to include or convert from analog press to digital print.
Simplifying color management in digital print operations makes digital printing more accessible to smaller companies with less-skilled employees and accurate color management reduces wasteful misprints as operators are able to act on color quality trends before they cause unacceptable print batches.
PRISMAsync Automated Color Tasks enables Canon cut-sheet toner-based digital press operators to manage the complex tasks of (1) press linearization, (2) sheet uniformity correction, (3) G7 calibration, (4) media color profiling, (5) G7 verification, and (6) results reporting, at the push of a button, completely hands-off, for all loaded job stocks, all in one step.
For Canon digital color press environments with multiple color presses this makes bringing the entire press room up-to-color faster, easier, and more efficient than ever before possible.
The hands-off operation of these multiple color measurement tasks is enabled by two Canon hardware sub-systems in particular: the Canon imagePRESS inline spectrophotometer (ILS), and the imagePRESS Sensing Unit.
Canon ILS captures the press linearization, G7 calibration, media color profiling, and G7 verification measurements while imagePRESS Sensing Unit captures sheet uniformity correction measurements.
Each automated color tasks function is timer-programmable, enabling the print system to alert the press operator when the time has come to execute the tasks. At the time of task execution, the system also alerts the operator if any required job stocks need to be reloaded into a press tray.
The automated hands-off operation of G7 calibration, G7 verification, and custom media color profiling is enabled by a unique aspect of the PRISMAsync product design history.
PRISMAsync was the first embedded complete closed loop G7 system for electrophotography to receive Idealliance G7 Certified System status, and the first color print server to provide an integrated color profiler and G7 calibration method.
